ABOUT

Hey, my name is Shawn and Plastic Rocket Pop is the new home for all of the (semi) creative crap that I do, whether it’s writing, drawing, making videos about the weird junk I collect, or the podcasts I host or co-host. I’ve been writing about, talking about, and designing pop culture-related stuff for almost 20 years. I ran a site called Branded in the 80s for just over 15 years, writing over one thousand nostalgia-laden articles and producing hours of podcasts. In that time I ended up as a frequent podcast guest (popping up on over 30 shows), was mentioned or written about in all kinds of print and online publications (The Guardian, the Washington Post, NPR, Non sport Update Magazine, Fangoria, and The Nerdist to name a few), and even appeared on film in Wolfman’s Got Nards, the documentary about The Monster Squad and the devotion to cinema (a film that played all over the world from the Egyptian theater to film festivals all over the globe.) With that site I’ve also tabled at comic and pop culture conventions (like Wizard World Chicago and the Atlanta Comic Con) as well as helped to plan and put on events like the Up Fair held in Lexington, KY back in 2010.

I had an absolute blast writing and podcasting at Branded in the 80s, but I kind of felt that the 80s theme was a little to constrictive and decided to shutter the site back in 2021. This site, Plastic Rocket Pop, is a place where I can carry on the work I did at Branded, but freeing myself up to share all of the stuff I’m into in one place, my little corner of the web, full of cult cinema talk, 30-40 year old toys, stickers, books, ephemera and all the weird illustrations and design work I’m proud enough to share. You’ll also find all of the projects I work on from the new Plastic Rocket Pop youtube channel my wife and I are launching to podcasts I co-host like the Cult Film Club and Crestwood House. I’ve also started doing a bit more professional design work and have started designing, illustrating and writing trading card sets for companies like Terror Vision Records.

So if you dig stuff like My Pet Monster, trading cards, the Transformers, Pee-wee Herman, Rad, The Monster Squad, old ass fruit snacks, Ecto Cooler, or 35 year-old mom magazines, Plastic Rocket Pop might just be the place you’d like to hang out.

If you dig what you see here you can Send me an e-mail or you can always hit me up on Blue Sky.
